Nutrition with a special emphasis on topics of interest to men.

Mens Nutrition from Brown's university
This is a good basic primer on men's nutrition. From here you can find links to many topics of specific interest to men relating to improving nutrition and lifestly quality.

Go Ask Alice–Fitness & Nutrition
You have to admire a woman like Alice. She answers questions on everything from low-protein diets to heroin use to the adverse effects of tattoo ink. Readers can submit questions on all sorts of health-related topics.

Alice (really the Columbia University Health Education Program staff) does an excellent job of providing accurate responses to nutrition and fitness questions in an engaging manner. Nutrition topics include sweet cravings, carotenoids, non-meat protein sources, and dietary supplements, to name just a few. The content is limited by the Q&A format, but is great if you need an answer to a specific question. And Alice always encourages her readers to see a health care professional if they need more information than she can give them online.

Healthier US.Gov
This government-sponsored website aims to be a “source of credible, accurate information to help Americans choose to live healthier lives.” It links readers to other government sites like the President’s Challenge, an awards program promoting fitness and 5-a-Day for Better Health, an action plan for eating more fruits and vegetables.

Consumers with health conditions like diabetes will be linked to the National Diabetes Education Program to learn, for example, how to help children and teens with the disease. Or those wanting more information on high blood pressure can visit the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute site for an introduction to the DASH Eating Plan and how to read a food label. Cholesterol and obesity are also covered with links to accurate, thorough information.

Lycopene
This industry-sponsored site focuses on the potential health benefits of lycopene–the red pigment that gives tomato products their characteristic color. “Research Updates” highlights studies that associate a high intake of lycopene with a reduced risk of some kinds of cancers. Longer, more technical research briefs are posted in “Scientific Abstracts.”

The authors of these articles clearly present the science that supports lycopene as a possible cancer fighter. Readers should be aware, though, that while some studies have found that people who regularly eat tomato products appear to be less likely to develop some kinds of cancers, not all studies have come to the same conclusion. And while a site called “Lycopene” can be expected to focus on just that one nutrient, there are many phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables that may also reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. A “Q&A,” for instance, says that lycopene is the only plant pigment that fights age-related eye disease, but a recent study has shown that the pigment that gives vegetables like broccoli and spinach their green color also works to keep eyes healthy.

FitnessOnline
FitnessOnline showcases the Weider group of magazines – Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Fitness, SHAPE, Flex, Natural Health, and Fit Pregnancy. Most of the articles focus on steps that readers can take to lose weight and get in shape. Check the “Fat Loss Handbook,” for instance, for tips on how to keep the flavor in meals while cutting out excess fat and calories, and get some advice from Shape on how to improve your diet one small change at a time. Online tools calculate Body Mass Index (BMI), ideal body weight, and the number of calories expended during exercise.
